Second Week in May 2012

Here is our second week in May...

We were introduced to the letter Xx this week.  As always we did our letter book along with other activities.

Older Children Letter Xx Book
We colored the letter Xx's and the ax on our cover.

On the left we did our 3 piece letter puzzles and a pre-writing activity.  On the right we found the one that was different and colored the foxes that had an Xx in them.

On the left we found the picture listening to clues and colored the picture following directions (from the Getting Ready for the Code Series) and we traced letter Xx's.  On the right we used Confessions of a Homeschooler's Letter Hunt in which we circled letter Xx's.

On the left we said the picture name and drew lines to the letter with the pictures ending sound (Get Ready for the Code Series) and we traced/printed letter Xx's.  On the right we found pictures that end with the /x/ sound, colored the picture and printed an x on the line.  We then traced/printed letter x's.

On the left we said the name of each picture, circled the letter that the picture ended with and wrote the ending letter on the line (Getting Ready for the Code Series) and we traced/printed letter Xx's.  On the right we drew lines from the picture to the letter that makes the pictures ending sound and we circled the letter that each picture ends with (Getting Ready for the Code Series).

On the left we said the picture name in the triange and circled the ending sound and we traced/printed letter X.  On the right we said each picture name, printed the ending sound letter and we traced/printed letter x's.

Letter Xx Tot Books
We used our dot markers to make an X from Confessions of a Homeschooler.

We put the xylophones together matching colors from Confessions of a Homeschooler.

We put together xylophones matching shapes from Confessions of a Homeschooler.
We colored xylophones according to colored color words from 1+1+1=1.
We found letter Xx's on the xylophone from 1+1+1=1.
 We did a pre-writing activity from 1+1+1=1.
 We matched shapes from 1+1+1=1.
We matched colored pictures to grayscale pictures from 1+1+1=1

We continued our discussion of the city vs. the country.
We watched a video of Country Mouse, City Mouse

First we made a list of the differences between the country and the city.  We did a paper where we decided if we wanted to live in the country or the city.

We then made mouse ears and made homes pretending to be the city mouse or the country mouse.

We talked about the concept of up and down and hot air balloons.

We started our discussion by talking about what we already knew about hot air balloons (we talked about them last week in our state unit).  The children couldn't wait to get out our tissue paper hot air balloon for another flying.  We sang a song about a hot air balloon going floating up and coming down and acted it out.

We used a concept paper with a hot air balloon to help talk about the concept of up and down.

We did another up and down game similar to "Simon Says".

We then made hot air balloons with tissue paper, yarn and poster board.

We talked about being proud and what it means.

We dictated and illustrated a time when we were proud of ourselves.

Zero.

We talked about the number zero doing a little rhyme on the pocket chart where hot air balloons kept coming down until zero hot air balloons were left floating in the clouds.  We then took objects and carefully put one away until we had zero objects.

We then made zero posters.  We traced the word zero and stamped with toilet paper tubes the number zero.

And that concludes our week.  Hope you will come back next week to see what we've been up too!
Best,
Rose
